The 1956 Memorial Day in Hungary always falls on23rd October 23 each year commemorating the revolt of the Hungarian people against the Hungarian People’s Republic Soviet backed government. This Revolution attempted to remove the Soviets control over Hungary and lasted from October 23 to November 10th 1956. Although the uprising failed it was the beginning of the end of Soviet occupation of Hungary.
This day is celebrated with public speeches and various exhibitions sharing the details of the 1956 Revolution. Visiting the Hungarian Parliament’s Ceremonial Hall is free of charge on this day.
